Summer trends inspired by Bay Area bloggers

As new trends take the stage in time for summer, we’ve been scouring the blogs of our favorite Bay Area fashion bloggers to get a leg up on what’s up-and-coming. Here are some of our favorite warm weather looks, with shopping tips on how to make them your own:

Tulle skirts inspired by Fancy Fine

Ashley Ording wore a gorgeous tulle skirt with a vintage lace top and vintage knee-length lace jacket for a flowy, feminine outfit worthy of a special occasion. To get Ashley’s look, try Topshop’s mini tulle skirt or, if you prefer longer lengths, black midi tulle skirt. Both skirts would pair well with a floral lace tank from Banana Republic, and a metallic skinny belt cinches the look. We think this outfit would be perfect for a summer wedding!

Textured layers inspired by Street Fashion Style

Dyanna Dawson and JT Tran crawl the trendy streets of San Francisco for photograph-worthy fashion. Thanks to the bay’s notorious fog and clouds, the average San Franciscan has mastered the art of layering, and we see this reflected even in their summer outfits. We especially love the use of textured layers, as captured on Street Fashion Style — this San Franciscan’s velvet dress and denim skirt keep it interesting and, more importantly, warm. For a similar look, layer a denim jacket over a velvet corset tunic. By the way, both pieces are now on sale! The denim jacket is available at Free People for $49.95, and the velvet corset tunic is available at Topshop for $35.

Weekend rockstar inspired by Going West

Jennie Lodge proves that you can never go wrong with a vintage band tee and rock-inspired mini skirt. She likes the olivaceous skirt from Bloomingdale’s, which features a stylistic front zip and asymmetric hem. For a casual weekend outing, we’d pair that with a vintage-inspired graphic tee from Urban Outfitters.

Seafolly Dotted Boyleg Maillot

When Victoria Smith posted about “Beach Bound” accessories last week, we fell in love with her retro bathing suit picks. The Seafolly Boyleg Maillot is modestly cut and flattering, and comes in fun dotted, green garden and black garden prints as well. All are available at Anthropologie.

Spring Trend: Icy Pastels

Punxsutawney Phil may have seen his shadow on Groundhog Day, but we’re still holding out hope that spring will grace us with its presence soon. In that spirit, we’ve been perusing the lookbooks of our favorite Shopilly brands for spring fashions that we can’t wait to incorporate into our warm weather wardrobes. One trend that caught our eye during last month’s New York Fashion Week was the icy pastel color palette. Usually pastels conjure up images of Easter eggs and spring bouquets, but these icy pastel pieces manage to be more edgy than sweet.

There are so many things we love about the Miel Dress from Anthropologie: the timeless silhouette, exaggerated bow, unusual color blocking. The full-bodied, satiny yellow skirt is paired with a black and cream pattern, giving this otherwise classic dress a contemporary twist.

Similarly, Kate Spade updates a classic cupcake skirt by presenting it in a bright, metallic pink. The Gene Skirt would be perfect over a simple top for a spring wedding.

If you’re looking to infuse some color into your work wardrobe, the Mint Tucked Tee from British retailer Topshop is a flattering choice. The tucked peplum shape provides a slimming effect, and the mint color is a refreshing departure from the usual office neutrals. Wear it to the office over a pencil skirt and then transition it to an evening piece by pairing it with skinny jeans and stilettos.

We love menswear-inspired styles (did you see Diane Keaton’s tailored suit at the Golden Globes?), and the Must-Have Blazer from Forever 21 fits the bill. Its longer, looser fit distinguishes it from most womens’ blazers, and the icy blue color is unexpected. At $29.80, this blazer is a steal!

Classic ballet flats are a wardrobe staple, and Cole Haan’s Manhattan Ballet flat is a beautiful take on the style. It comes in eight colors, but we particularly like the rose gold color- the metallic sheen keeps it from being too sweet. Right now, it’s on sale for $109.95.

Lastly, how beautiful is the Tamitha Backpack by Aimee Kestenberg? The leather zip backpack manages to be both stylish and functional at once, which, alas, is probably the reason it’s backordered at Nordstrom.

What are some of the spring trends you’re loving right now? We’d love to hear from you- write to us in the comments!

Fall Preview: Ankle Boots, Sleek Trenches, and Cozy Knits

Labor Day marked the unofficial end of summer, and though we’re sad to see it go, we’re already looking forward to fall. In fact, we’re looking forward to it so much that we’ve rounded up a fashion preview to get you excited for the wardrobe transition that accompanies cooler temperatures and shorter days. Take a look at some of the trends we’re noticing from our favorite brands:

Ankle Boots

Fiera Ankle Booties

The last few years have been all about knee-high boots in riding and western styles, but we’re loving the lower-cut ankle boots that have been making the rounds in fashion blogs. These boots are both cute and versatile — wear them with summer dresses and bare legs now, and slip them over leggings or skinny jeans come fall. Some of our favorite styles are the Fiera double zipper booties by Aldo and the combat-inspired Towner booties by Nine West. We also like the eclectic boot styles Cupcakes and Cashmere blogger Emily Schuman highlighted in this recent post.

Sleek Trenches

ASOS Skater Trench

A classic trench coat is a must-have piece — throw one over any outfit for instant polish. Asos has a great selection of trenches at affordable prices. We like the Asos Classic Trench and Asos Skater Trench, both of which come in camel or black.

Cozy Knits

Knitted Tie Back Cable Top

If you’ve been affected by the recent heat waves in the midwest, cozy knit sweaters are probably not at the top of your “to-buy” list right now. That being said, this Forever 21 Floral Open-Knit Top is a lighter option for early mornings or crisp evenings. For those of you living in cooler regions, we love the adorable detailing on Topshop’s Knitted Tie Back Cable Top.

Which fall trends are you looking forward to wearing the most? Tell us in the comments!

Cheers,

10 Head-to-Toe Beach Outfits We Love

Beach trips are surely penciled into your summertime calendars, so why not rev up the excitement with Shopilly’s 10 favorite beach looks?

#1: The Nighttime Beach Look

Image

A sexy, light-weight black dress is sure to be eye-catching amongst a sea of neon and pastel hues from fashionistas who are sticking to the traditional beach color palette. For even more eyes on you, choose a dress with open-back details—people on the beach will be envious of your style choice! Scour Forever21H&M, or Charlotte Russe to find the perfect dress.

#2: Comfortable Cute

 Image

Our second favorite look is chic in its simplicity; pair high-waisted light wash denim shorts with a strapless bikini top and a flowy cardigan. Experiment with colors by choosing a printed bikini top and complete the look with a brown leather bag. The comfort from this kind of look would be perfect for everything from beach sports to a quiet read under the sun. For high-waisted shorts, check American Apparel; for a flowy cardigan try American Eagle; for bikini tops try Victoria’s Secret; for brown bags try Kate Spade.

#3: The Floral Romper

Image

This look is perfect for girly stylistas who are known for always wearing soft colors and floral patterns. The romper is comfortable for a beach environment, but the sexy back details make the ensemble just daring and skin-baring enough for some flirty fun. For rompers, try American EagleForever21, or Macy’s.

#4: The Sheer Cover-Up

 Image

Try a beach day with a sheer cover-up dress to throw on over your bathing suit. This romantic look screams effortless sophistication, and will look beautiful as you both saunter along the shore and dance the day away! Check H&M or Nanette Lepore to get your hands on one.

#5: The Striped Maxi

Image

Want to feel like a sea goddess? You absolutely can’t go wrong with a maxi dress for the beach, especially if it’s a striped one! Maxi dresses were pretty much invented for the beach; the pattern is just bold enough to make a statement, while the silhouette is elegant and sophisticated. Macy’sH&MAnn Taylor, and Gap might have your perfect maxi dress.

#6: A Twist on the Traditional Cover-Up

 Image

Instead of a cover-up that literally covers you from head to knee, try tying a loose-fitted sweater or tunic over your bathing suit to create the ultimate beach look. All there is left to complete the look is wavy, wind-swept hair, a boho-inspired necklace, and more chunky jewelry! For the perfect tunic, check AeropostaleBanana Republic, or Club Monaco; for accessories try Anthropologie or Free People.

#7: Bold Skirt

 Image

Tired of wearing shorts with your bikini top to the beach? Try pairing your bathing suit top with a solid colored bright skirt to create a sweet and innocent look. A high and sleek ponytail with a bold lip will be your finishing touches to creating a memorable fashion statement. Check Forever21 or J. Crew for your perfect skirt!

#8: Let Your Bag Do The Talking

 Image

Let your accessories elevate your beach outfit! An oversized beach tote in a bold color will do just the trick. Let your clothing be simplistic and understated to draw most of the attention to your arm candy.  Try Net-a-PorterMacy’s, or Bloomingdale’s for the best selection!

#9: The Conservative Look

 Image

Staying conservative on the beach doesn’t mean you have to admit defeat on the chic scale. Try juxtaposing a nautical sweater with bold, solid-colored shorts for a colorful beach-time look. A cute neutral-shade hat can work to pull the look together, and sunglasses will give you that extra oomph! Find these fashion items at J. CrewBanana RepublicOld Navy, or Gap.

#10: Denim

Image

Denim for the beach is fresh and stylish with a hint of sporty. Mix it up with a pair of canvas sneakers for a casual, tomboy look and finish it off with a neutral or minimally patterned tote bag. Try Abercrombie & Fitch for a tote bag; TOMS for shoes; and Urban OutfittersTopshop, or Nordstrom for denim.

We hope these beach fashions inspired you to think outside of the box for your next beach trip! Let us know in the comments below which look was your favorite, and then sign up at Shopilly so that you can stay up-to-date on your favorite stores’ sales so you can snag the items on your to-buy lists soon!

Style Spotlight on Wedge Sandals

Lately, we’ve noticed a variety of cute wedge sandals cruising the sidewalks and gracing the fashion blogs. We’re fans of this trend – wedges provide a comfortable way of adding height to your stance and sophistication to your outfits. Plus, for anyone not blessed with the natural talent of being able to balance or walk in heels, wedges are a safer alternative. Below, we’ve picked out five wedge sandals that are the perfect fit for any budget and the perfect finishing touch for any spring outfit.

From top left, clockwise: Waylon Harachi Cork Wedge Sandal, Piccolo Wedges, Seychelles Thyme Wedge Sandals, Fleure Gladiator Sandals, Wood Wedge Sandals

From top left, clockwise: Waylon Harachi Cork Wedge Sandal, Piccolo Wedges, Seychelles Thyme Wedge Sandals, Fleure Gladiator Sandals, Wood Wedge Sandals

Waylon Harachi Cork Wedge Sandal, Target ($29.99)
With a 4.25” heel, these wedges may be sky-high, but the thick foot straps and ankle strap make these much sturdier than your average pair of strappy sandals. The wedges come in black, blue, cognac and red, and at just $29.99, the price is definitely right. Pair these wedges with a pair of cropped jeans or your favorite maxi dress.

Piccolo Wedges, Asos ($66.50)
If you’re looking for a pair of wedges that can easily transition from office hours to happy hour, this is the pair for you. Featuring a Perspex (shatter-resistant acrylic glass) wedge heel, Asos’ Piccolo Wedges put a modern twist on the wedge heel. While they don’t fit perfectly into the sandal category, the peep toe openings give them a springtime feel.

Seychelles Thyme Wedge Sandal, Urban Outfitters ($95.00)
These wedge sandals come in three colors, but the jewel-toned teal is decidedly our favorite. We’d wear these with a pair of dark tuxedo shorts for a pop of color and a leg-lengthening effect.

Fleure Gladiator Sandals, Topshop ($110)
If you think wedge sandals are too dainty and sweet, think again. Featuring a mini wedge, these black leather gladiator sandals are easy to walk in and can toughen up any outfit. Try pairing a feminine swing dress with these gladiator sandals for an unexpected contrast.

Wood Wedge Sandals, Mango ($119.99)
Leather and wood combine to create these gorgeous wedges by the Spanish clothing company Mango. The neutral coloring makes these sandals extremely versatile – you can just as easily wear them with jeans as with flowy trousers or a fitted dress.
